I sorta understand. I often feel that I need a new fly rod and/or reel to go with a fly fishing trip. My wife doesn't seem to understand.....?

I'm a big whisk(e)y fan. I tend to gravitate more to the single malt Scotch whisky side of things, particularly the peaty Islay malts. i don't limit myself to that, though, and frequently enjoy Irish (Bushmills) whiskey, Bourbon, Tennessee (George Dickel), and Japanese single malts. Not a big drinker of Canadian whisky. Too light and sweet for my palate. I like my spirits to be full-bodied with big flavors.
Whisk(e)y goes great with beer, so I generally enjoy it neat with a frosty pint of a nice, hoppy, Pacific Northwest-style IPA or a nicely balanced stout.
Every whisk(e)y starts out as a beer prior to distilllation, so the two compliment each other very well.

I did a complete 180-degree turnaround. When I was a JW, I was spiteful, wrathful, judgmental, dishonest, cheauvanistic, fearful, ashamed, closed-minded, abusive, and powerless. It took a while to deprogram and re-raise myself, but I can say with the utmost conviction that I am now 1,000 times better person than I was when I was a Jehovah's Witness.
My quality of life is better. I'm much, much happier and healthier. I don't judge people based on their beliefs or appearance, I have a great job, a great wife, and a great family (my wife's side). I truly feel that I am a good person who contributes to society. I felt none of this as a JW.

What Turns The Average "Worldly" Person Away From The Witnesses?
by minimus inis it their door-to-door incessant preaching?
is it their view on blood?
is it that the religion itself is simply often misunderstood?.

My In-Laws have seen firsthand how the JWs have treated me. They give JWs hell whenever they come to their door.

Ugly people and crimes.
by Lore ini like to think that i'm perfectly rational at all times.. so in the interest of making myself more awesome i'd like to admit to and try to to fix a prejudice i think i may have.
but i'd also like to make sure it's not grounded in reality.. .
so earlier i saw a story about a woman who killed her baby in the microwave.

Japanese dolphin slaughter..........
by watersprout inthe japanese dolphin slaughter commenced on the 7th of september and will continue through to march of next year.
thousands upon thousands of dolphins/whales will lose their lives.
those that do survive will be sent to places like seaworld where they will be forced to perform for us humans.. this video is very upsetting.... makes you realize how truly evil members of the human race are.... i wouldn't suggest watching if you are weak stomached.. just wanted to share as many people don't realize that this goes on.

Do you give to beggars?
by jean-luc picard ini have seldom given money to beggars.
i have often thought that many are people who just do not want to work.
however, i am starting to wonder if i ought to: and how much to give?.

I saw homeless guy (I usually refer to them as "bums", because that's what most of them are) begging on a freeway exit with 4 dogs tied to his shopping cart. I went to the nearest grocery store and returned with a 40lb bag of dog food. I was furious. Don't try to take on even one dog if you can't even take care of yourself.
I will sometimes give homeless folks extra food, if I have some in the car with me.

Tough Situation.
by Low-Key Lysmith inmy grandmother is not doing so well health-wise.
she just turned 91 and has been a faithful jw her entire life.
she has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and is battling pneumonia on top of that.. we were very close up until the point, a few years ago, when she asked me flat-out if i had any intention of coming back or if i even believed in god.

Thank you everyone for the kind words and support.
My parents are really not in this picture too much. This is my mother's mother. My mom passed away about 6 years ago from pancreatic cancer. My dad is pretty much spineless and useless, also leaning toward supporting my sister's accusations of spiritism. This may explain some of my younger sister's behavior. I lost a sister to leukemia, as well as all of my other grandparents. I absolutely WILL NOT subject myself to another bullshit JW funeral.
My grandma really doesn't have anything in the way of finances. Medicare is covering the medical bills, thankfully.
It's wierd. Just whenyou think after 20 years that you're pretty much over the whole JW thing and have gotten used to not having a connection with family, something like this happens and stirs up old crap again.
But anyway, thanks again for your input. I am taking all of these points into consideration.

Thanks, Tal & sd-7.
On a lighter note, I haven't been home to Utah in a long time. It will be nice to see old friends and favorite places. We're pulling our camper trailer down with us and plan to do some camping on the drive back to Seattle, maybe Yellowstone, we'll see.

We were very close up until the point, a few years ago, when she asked me flat-out if I had any intention of coming back or if I even believed in God. My honest answers pretty much solidified my apostate status. She wished me well, told me she would always love me, and that it had to be goodbye. I understood that there was no malice in her decision, that she was only doing what she thought God wanted her to do. Tough though it is to hear that, I knew it was coming. That was the last time we spoke until recently, when she informed me of her current situation. She says she wants to see me one last time to say goodbye.
I plan to drive with my wife and younger sister (also out) from Seattle to SLC to visit her one final time before she goes.
Here's the messy part: She has been under the care of a homeopathic, natural healer who consequently, is a Witness from another congregation. My youngest sister (still very much in) has gone on the warpath, accusing my sick grandma of taking part in "spiritism" as a result of the homeopathic medicine. This person, by the way has been to Bethel to practice on people there and has the support and backing of the elders in her congregation. My sister called in her In-Laws from California to try to put a stop to this treatment, claiming that conventional medicine and doctors can heal her better. Her In-Laws don't even know my grandmother, but have invaded her home, turned away the person treating her, and have pretty much taken over, telling my grandma that her "spiritistic" medicine will not be tolerated. My grandmother was allowed to lie unconcious in her home because these idiots thought she was "sleeping". Thankfully my Aunt pretty much stepped in and told these folks to f*ck off and that they aren't welcome. If these people are still around when I show up, they are going to have some REAL problems on their hands.
Anyway, I'm hoping for the best. It will be good to see her, even if it's the last time. i just wanted to vent a little to folks that might have some idea of what I'm going through. My wife and her family are very supportive, but just don't grasp JW behavior. Can't say that I blame them.
Thanks for reading.
